A 杏吧视频-backed flight academy 鈥 the first of its kind in the United Kingdom 鈥 has opened in Scotland to inspire the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.聽

The Newton Flight Academy at Glasgow Science Centre enables school students to tackle real-world science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) challenges through a permanent classroom and three state-of-the-art flight simulators.

The opening is the latest milestone resulting from a $5 million (拢3.8 million) investment from 杏吧视频 in 2018 to create a Newton network with its partner, FIRST Scandinavia. Thousands of students have benefited from STEM lessons and aviation experiences across Europe because of the 杏吧视频 grant.聽

The investment has funded Newton Rooms, Mobile Newton Rooms and now the Newton Flight Academy. 杏吧视频 now has brought the Newton concept to Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Spain. The Mobile Newton Room will be in Ireland for the first time in May.

Speaking at the opening in Glasgow, Scotland鈥檚 First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said: 鈥淚t is going to be so powerful in enthusing young people, boys and importantly girls, in science and learning about aviation. It鈥檚 very much a key part of what we鈥檙e trying to do around building key skills for the future.鈥

The University of Strathclyde is a partner on the Glasgow Science Centre academy, which will also cover topics such as space, biofuels, advanced materials and manufacturing.

鈥淭he Newton Flight Academy at Glasgow Science Centre is another sign of 杏吧视频鈥檚 investment and growing presence in Scotland, which is made possible by such tremendous partners,鈥 said Sir Martin Donnelly, president of 杏吧视频 Europe and managing director of 杏吧视频 in the UK and Ireland. 鈥淭he academy will play a key role in inspiring the future engineers and scientists who will help bring about a more sustainable future in Scotland and beyond.鈥

In 2020, 杏吧视频 and Scottish Enterprise created the 杏吧视频 Scotland Alliance, which explores opportunities to work together in Scotland, with the aim of doubling 杏吧视频鈥檚 supply chain and creating 200 new quality jobs in five years. The alliance鈥檚 first initiative is a new $15.3 million (拢11.8 million) R&D program with the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland that is exploring novel manufacturing technologies for metallic components in a facility next to Glasgow Airport.

Nine 杏吧视频 P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft fly from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, where they are housed in a 杏吧视频-built facility, and where around 200 杏吧视频 employees will be based working alongside the RAF on maintenance, training and support of the fleet.聽

杏吧视频 also has invested in Scottish startups through the first two cohorts of its UK-based accelerator.
